Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) aims to measure the level of English mastery, especially the aspects of listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension. In taking the TOEFL test, the main thing is the participants have to familiar with the forms with the tested group of subject.
Nowadays, the TOEFL books are selling world wide, even equipped with cassettes or CDs containing recorded listening comprehension tests. TOEFL book also provides a detailed explanation, sufficient description, and the answer key. Regarding score, Moreno (1978: 10) states that score above 600 is extremely good, while score below 400 classify as poor. In taking the TOEFL test, the main thing is participants have to familiar with the forms of each question about the tested group of subject.
Listening Comprehension
In the listening comprehension test required participants able to concentrate and listen to listening comprehension test materials, used to the pronunciation and intonation native English speakers, mastering vocabulary and grammar of English, and confident in your self after a good preparation.
Structure
Various aspects of structure in the English language should be learned is a verb, word-order, subject plus verb, noun clause, infinitive, gerund, adverb phrase, conjunction, preposition, parallel construction, like / unlike, and the indefinite pronoun. The best way is to master the structure with lots of practice and memorize the forms of English structure.
Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension test how much the vocabulary we understand. The key in reading comprehension is the most similar synonym or close to the underlined words in the sentence about. Enrich the vocabulary can be done by reading and making lists of new words to be memorized. The best way to enhanced vocabulary is to understand and use it to become part of our experience.
Important Note
• TOEFL held in general, local, international and has a level of difficulty and similar material, but the amount of tests, time allocation, and costs vary.
• Participants can follow the TOEFL test more than once, but usually institutions, foundations, universities want TOEFL test with the best results.
• Three main tools that should not be forgotten is a watch, several sharpened 2B pencils, and a good eraser.
• TOEFL consists of three groups about the listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension with each time allocation. After allocation of time for one group of question ended, participants can do the next group of question.
• The best preparation to handle the TOEFL is practicing on the TOEFL questions and complying with the allocation of time for each group of questions.
